I have installed dayton on an iMac DVSE 500 mhz. It's my first attemt to run a Linux workstation on a Mac. Overall I'm impressed. Compared to my 386 workstations (Debian potato, Mandrake 8.2 and RH 7.3 - on an Athlon 700 and 2 X Maxtor fluid 7200 RPM HDs): No fontserverproblems (xfs etc, but I haven't played with them yet), just as fast (with 1-2 fast discs YDL would be much faster, I think - right now it is located on one 5 gb partition at the inner (slow) end of the standard, again slow, 30 gb HD). OpenOffice (1.01) runs great, loads pretty fast and no fonts seems to break it (as opposed to the 386-Linux build).

I have a few issues until now, though:

KDE:
1) Problems with the soundserver on KDE3: During the Window Manager init part, it starts a heavy background noise that continues untill I kill the whole kernel. The noise is amplified just by moving the cursor or perform any other cpu-intensive action. Gnome is not affected by this behavior, but KDE is useless right now. I guess it's just a minor configuration problem, but I can't locate it.
Modules.conf looks like this:
alias sound-slot-0 dmasound_pmac
alias sound-slot-1 dmasound_pmac
alias sound-service-0-0 dmasound_pmac
alias sound-service-0-3 dmasound_pmac
alias sound-service-1-0 dmasound_pmac

2) Konqueror is VERY slow (about 25 spins) to startup, and also when I just spawn a new window (but works OK once it IS started). There is a qt-update on YDL's homepage, but apt-get claims that I have the newest version already!

Overall:

3) I cant find MidnightCommander or any similar filemanager in the YDL packages or as an RPM. Is it likely that mc is not available for this platform?

4) Do any of you have experience with compiling other packages, like Krusader? I would very much like to have Krusader once I get KDE to run properly.

Comments on any of these problems is deeply welcomed, please!

MC is in with the KDE terminal. It doesn't work, but it is in the session menu.

Yes Konqueror is slow. Maybe I will have to go back to Gnome to see if I get better results.

I just want to be able to work or surf on it for an extended session without having to reboot or log out to fsck it.

I have until now, not been able to handle the looks of KDE. It looks good now, but I am not sure if it is a solid as Gnome.
