Carol Firona, CEO of HP, has pushed big time their effort into the Linux space. She seems very interested in pursuing Linux. My question for those more in the know is: Is HP trying with this merger(if it suceeds) to gather enough engineers together to make a viable consumer and business OS to compete with MS with? A Linux for the masses?

I don't think so.

HP/Compaq will have to support True64, HP/UX and SecureLinux as developers.

My guess is Carly's long-term goal is to phase out True64 and HP/UX (like she has already started with MPE/iX) and promote SecureLinux as her SERVER platform.

Of course HP/UX and True64 won't go anywhere overnight... this is 10 years+ down the road...

But I don't see HP making a play for Linux on the Desktop.
