Does anyone know the reason why it is impossible to use OpenBSD on a PowerMac with a PPC601 (although it is possible to use OênBSD on a 68k Mac) ?

Because OpenBSD is written for 68K machines, not for PPC macs, although a PPC CPU can emulate 68K instrution.

I'm afraid you are wrong because OpenBSD works with PPC604/G3/G4 machines... (as they say).

On their site it says OpenBSD currently only supports "New World" machines... any Macintosh based on the 601 chip is an "Old World" machine. Also, aren't the 601 PPC machines NuBus based? If so, very few versions of Linux support NuBus based machines.

Yees, PPC601 machines can only run MkLinux.
Why ? What is the particularity of such machine which prevent them to be used by other UNIX' systems ?

NuBus machines I believe lack open firmware, which is used by most versions of Linux to boot the computer. This may be an oversimplification on my part... if so my apologies.

That doesn't explain the Power Mac 7200, 7500 and 8200, which are PCI-based PowerPC 601 machines. Presumably nobody wants to take the time to write BSD kernel support for the 601 processor. It is obviously possible, since even LinuxPPC supports the models above, as well as the NuBus Power Macs! It's just a matter of finding someone who wants to do it.

It could be that bacause it would explain the reason why OpenBSD runs on 68k machines that do not have OpenFirmware.
Last question : is it long and/or difficult to write BSD kernel support for the 601 processor ?

The 7xxx series have what? Open Firmware v. 1.0 while NewWorld is 3.0. Take a look at OpenBSD 2,9 ($30) which ships June 1 and see what the requirements are.
VPC4 really needs G3 but you can use NetBSD 1.5 with it which is close.
And then there is SuSe 7.1 and YDL 2.0 which just came out if you want to look on that side of the fence. And Darwin 1.3.1.
