Is the airport card (basically an orincco silver 802.11b card) supported (and working) under linux with the airport base station?

I havnt put linux on this new tibook of mine, due to how involved it seems (and so much room for error) and have also been considering going wireless around the house.. any chance there is a gold version of the airport card? 40bit encryption doesnt seem like enough for me thank you very much.. I'd hate to add the overhead of creating an additional encrypted tunnel thru the airport base station (bridge mode)

I am not sure about using an airport base station but I have had success with an airport card using a linksys wap11 wireless access point. I am using 2.4.2 kernel from the SuSE distro. To configure I only needed to use the commands insmod airport, ifconfig eth0 down, ifconfig airport <ip address> up and I had a connection. If the airport card works with linksys I can't see why it wouldn't work with the abs.
