Agreed. In fact, Linux's main file system, Ext2, is rather temperamental (read: extremely susceptible to data loss if not unmounted cleanly, at least compared to very resilient file systems like HFS, HFS+, NTFS, ReiserFS, and other journaling file systems). In other words, if you are using Linux, I would highly recommend a strict backup regimen.

P.S. Note that I am not trying to imply that HFS and HFS+ are journaling file systems, as they definitely are not. However, compared to FAT, Ext and Ext2, they are very stable file systems -- which is why Windows users' hard drives "crash" so often, requiring reformatting, while that pracitically never happens to Mac users!
