I am very new to Linux, but I wanted to install Red Hat 7.0 in Connectix Virtual PC 4. I had a few problems that I was hoping someone here could help me with.

I went through the wizard in VP4 to create a new hard drive and configuation. I chose it to be prepped for Linux. Then, I put in my CD with Red Hat 7.0. It started and after about half a dozen false starts, I actually got it going through the process of installation. Now this is on a 266 Mhz iMac, and they may account for the time, but it took about three hours to get to the end of the installation. I got to the point when it wanted to create a boot disk. I have an imation SuperDisk drive connected to my iMac. It always works fine with VPC running Windows and treats it like a regular floppy disk drive. The Red Hat installation wanted nothing to do with it, though. No matter what floppy I put in, it wouldn't take it. I started a concurrent VPC session running Windows95 and it read and formatted my disk fine.

So I went back to the Red Hat Installation, and notice that there is a way to bypass this part of the setup--but it is grayed out. So, hoping that we're at the end, I just restarted the VPC--there was really nothing else I could do. When I tried to run Linux though, VPC came back with the error that there wasn't a system disk on the virtual hard drive. Can anyone help me with this?

I was talking to Connectix after putting BSD on a fixed size linux type disk image and learned that VPC doesn't work well with linux (was surprised BSD went so well). Seeing that YDL for PPC or SuSe 7.1 are PPC bootable etc, why not go that route?

I wanted to go the VirtualPC route because it was the safest! I am very new to Linux, but desire to learn the ins and outs of it. By installing it in VPC, I don't have to worry about messing up anything on my system by accident. Also, I have a copy of Red Hat 7.0 which also made it pretty convenient.

I emailed Connectix regarding my difficulties with installation, and currently they do not support Red Hat above v. 6.1 because of "known issues."

Yeah, I tried for several days to get it to work. Package installation is no problem, but it wouldn't install lilo or create a floppy boot disk. Installing 6.1 was easy, though I couldn't do it via ftp (i would get an error as soon as it loaded the packages), so I burned the 6.1 ISO to a cd-rw and it did a complete install in about an hour.
