I can't seem to connect to LinuxPPC.com, or LinuxPPC.org anymore. Does anyone know what happened?

This is the very first Linux distribution I started with, a little over 3 year ago. Also; Jason Haas was fantastic for giving support and accurate information. Has anyone heard anything about them?

LinuxPPC was disbanded in the last year or so. There is still a great interest on all parties. Their site was still up for some time after 'the end' of LinuxPPC as we know it.

You're absolutely right about Jason, always helpful and willing to help. I can't recall the news about Jason, but he's working in the field and is still a mac guy. Check out www.yellowdoglinux.com for a recent distro that's got a lot to offer.

This linux distribution is always atop things and just released 2.2 of their product. For older hardware use Bootx or Quik to get it booted (machines that are openfirmware handicapped) on oldworld machines. NewWorld machines should boot right off the CD and allow installation.

I just installed it and its a great release! I've tried Mandrake and thought it was a decent release, but the installer was problematic for me (not having an openfirmware-enabled machine I wanted to get it installed onto). SuseLinux seems less installer friendly (and I've installed MkLinux on a 6100 before the days of installers!)

The first boot up of MkLinux DP1 was such a thrill on a 64MB 6100 and a 1GB drive! Ahhh, the memories!

Damn. Ok, well... I've heard some very good things about Yellow Dog, though they seemed a little pricey that last time I looked at them. Yeah, I still have LinuxPPC2000 (1st qtr) installed on an external drive. I could probably fire it up right now on my beige G3 tower; maybe I will do that tonight, just to remind myself of the "good old days" .

I also have an iBook and an iMac, so I'd be interested in getting Linux installed on those also. I had a friend d/l the 3 discs of DebianPPC for me, but I can seem to get the installer to boot from the CD. I may try that one again though. Thanks for the info!

You can download the disk image from the yellowdog site if you have a CD-burner. Its 600MB+ so if you're on a modem it would be a task (I've done it in the past -- for LinuxPPC as a matter of fact).

If you don't have a burner, perhaps someone you know has one. Good luck!

I'm in the process of downloading the YDL 2.2 disk image (thank heavens for resumeable downloads!). Even on a cable modem connection, it's going to take around 6 hours total, mainly because of the high number of folks logging onto the server to get 2.2.
This will be my first experience with Linux, and I am encouraged to hear that YDL is considered "user-friendly."
