I've got this Performa 6400 in my house that is always running since it's the only computer that has a burner. I am getting frustrated with it's speed (or lack of) and I would like to put a faster OS on there. I suspect that OS 9 is not taking full advantage of this thing. I'd like to also use it as an ftp server and web server so that I can get to files from outside my home network. AFP over IP would be nice as well.

Unfortunately my unix experience is limited to OS X, so the installation of a *nix is something that I've had no real experience. What I want to know is, where can I download a linux CD that I can burn in toast, and then boot off of to install linux on my mac? Can I find out if it will support my SCSI burner? my printer? my ethernet card? It seems that Yellow Dog comes with lots of nice goodies preinstalled, but when I tried downloading the thing it ended up downloading a whole bunch of files. It confused the hell out of me. Is there a toast or mac os disk image out there that I can download? Thanks.
