I'm trying to install Yellow Dog on my G3/350-upgraded 9500, and start off by running the BootX installer, per the YDL website's instructions. Well, it copies almost all of the 100+ files, but always freezes up when copying "vmlinux," which is one of the last five or ten files to install.
It's not a COMPLETE freeze; I just remain stuck at the spinning B&W beach ball forever, and the progress bar doesn't move any further. I don't hear the hard drive doing anything more, either.
I'm guessing this may be due to my Adaptec 2940U2W card, or possibly the IMS Twin Turbo video card I have in it (originally from a UMAX S900). I've heard they both -- the Adaptec specifically -- can cause problems.
I'm having no luck with ANY other non-OS 9 operating system -- can't do UUX to install OS X or X Server; can't install NetBSD (OpenFirmware's old as hell on the 9500, and the Adaptec's causing problems too, I suspect) . . . it's frustrating.
Any ideas?
