3) Any suggestions for fun things to do with it?

Hey Gabe:
1. Yellow Dog Linux is the most popular PPC distribution of Linux, therefore if things go bad, best chance of someone already having an answer to help you out. But SUSE, Debian, and Mandrake also have PPC distributions.
2. That machine is indeed "old world" in that part of the OS runs from the ROM chip and not from RAM, so you will be unable to have a Linux only install. You must have at least a minimal install of MacOS to be able to run BootX to boot into Linux. Also that means you will have to have 4 partitions, HFS for MacOS (so linux can mount it), and linux main, swap, and boot partitions. All this is outlined at
www.yellowdoglinux.com, in their support, install section.
3. You can do anything with Linux that you can do in Windoze or MacOS, I use my Linux box to surf and email, and just to learn Linux. I am pretty good at MacOS 8-9.x and various M$ operating systems and just wanted to learn something new.
Hope this helps,
