I'm writing this in Mandrake PPC 8.2 with my G4 867 (GeF2MX, 17 Apple Flat Panel).
To change the "nv" driver to "fbdev" and the "24" to "16" Default Depth with pico in
XF86Config-4 file, you have to run "urpmi pine" in root. It's not installed by default.
When you reboot after the installation, you press "l" to enter linux, immediately after
you type "linux 3". Then you can login to root to make the change in the file.
During the installation in the monitor section, my choice was "Generic High Frequency
SVGA, 1024x768 at 70Hz". As long as you stay in level 3, you can test your choice.
You type "startx", then you go back to root to run pico again. To save a file in pico,
ctrl x, y, then enter (maybe you know that, i didn't).
Stew Benedict from Mandrake's mailing list was really helpful. I have to thank him again.
The only problem i have is with the language. I can't use French because it
doesn't appear anywhere. But it's a small problem. Mandrake 8.2 is very stable and
fast.
----------
to install...
install-text
(in the monitor section choose "Generic High Frequency SVGA, 1024x768 at 70Hz"
----------
after the installation...
"l" for linux
press tab quickly, then type "linux 3"
type "root" and your root password
urpmi pine (to install pico)
cd /etc/X11
pico XF86Config-4
(you make the changes - fbdev, 16)
you save in pico
exit the directory and back to root
type "startx"
Good luck!
(I was not able - yet - to have this work in YDL 2.2, it only work in 8 bit color).
