i dont think that i did, all i got asked was the display size, passwords, my name, wheather or not to use my vid accelerator
after Linux goes through its start up, it just comes up with a black screen with this on it:

Yellow Dog Linux release 2.2 (Rome)
Kerneln2.4.18-0.9a on an PPC (tty1)

localhost login:

then if i log in from there it will say:

Last login: Sun May 12 1824:07 on tty1
[Dieter@localhost Dieter]$

any ideas on what i might have done wrong or what i could do to get into kde or gnome from here?

would you happen to know what the exact name of the kde or gnome executables are? That would really be helpful because then i could just search for them from the unix-dos looking system.

You probably chose network server when you installed YDL. People do this all the time. The network server option doesn't install the X Window Server or the GUIs. You should use development workstation. If this is not the problem just post a reply.

Please forgive me if this is a really insultingly obvious suggestion. Sometimes the obvious answers are the hardest to find. Did you try entering the command: "startx" (no quotes)? To switch from gnome to kde or whatever: "switchdesk kde" or "switchdesk gnome".

Good luck...

Thanks for all of your help. I decided to re-install the system
completely and then choose graphical login. I am now typing this message
on my imac running KDE. It took me three days to figure out how to log
onto the internet and i am now enjoying linux and kde. Again thanks for
your help.
