Is the iPhone app any different/better than the flat-out mobile version of the website?

I love Dropbox, but it's not correct to describe it as syncing files to your iPhone. If you have a file in your Dropbox 'cloud', it does not sync to your iPhone. You can easily access it from your iPhone assuming you have Internet access, but if you have some critical files which you need on your iPhone and you might not have Internet access (a good example for me is travel confirmations/documents when on the road or in an airport) then Dropbox does not seem to be the way forward. Something like Air Sharing or Evernote is probably better.
I think that the Dropbox iPhone app would be much improved if there was actual syncing in some way. Perhaps an iPhone folder within the main Dropbox folder on your desktop could initiate real syncing of those files with the iPhone as well as them being avaialble via the desktop app, the web interface etc.

That's why you Favorite your items -- do that, and they travel with you.

^ That is correct. Hit favourite and the file is stored on the iPhone. You can favourite them all if you will.

Ah ha. Very helpful. Thanks. The Dropbox FAQ doesn't really mention this (although I see that this is described under 'Favorites'):
Why don't files sync automatically to my iPhone?
The Dropbox iPhone app is not a sync application in the way that the Dropbox desktop application is. Because Apple does not allow apps to run in the background, writing a sync application that always keeps your files in sync with your iPhone was not possible. In addition, because 3G and EDGE connections are typically slow and unreliable, it made more sense to us to only load files "on-demand" to provide a snappier experience. Having said that, we will be improving the iPhone app over time to make more use of the main Dropbox sync service than it does today.

They need a way to transfer files to the public folder so you can host them online.
