i just got an iphone recently, can i put local files to my iphone? seems i cant transfer them directly...

I assume your on iPhone 4 or iOS 4.1 if you go to iTunes-menu>File>Add to Library,
this will bring up a window where you can then select the folder of your choice (where ever your films are stored).
When you click on a video-file you'll see whether it plays or not but remember this is iTunes so even though a DIVX file plays your iPhone wont be able to!

THe files I'm sure it plays are H.264, .mp4, .m4v & .mov but you my want to convert anyothers that aren't use this: iSquint (Mac) - Download

Use handbrake instead of iSquint.

iSquint has been out of development for years now, and it won't do the high resolutions that iPhone 4/iPad are capable of.
