(Updated with change info) Apple has released Xcode 4.4.1, a new version of the company's development suite for Mac and iOS apps. The exact content of the update is a mystery, as Apple only comments that it "runs on both OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion." The download is 1.46GB, and requires OS X 10.7.4 or later.

Update: Detailed release notes indicate that the software has been repackaged as a standalone app, replacing a previous Install Xcode package. Correspondingly the software now supports delta updates; Apple has in fact added a Downloads pane, through which developers can install optional components like command line tools or earlier iOS Simulators. To get Xcode 4.4.1 however people must download it through the Mac App Store, and anyone still on v4.2 won't see v4.4.1 listed as an App Store update.

I'm sure you're busy, but it didn't take me 10 seconds to see that the current version has more 1 star reviews than any other rating. Users complain of bugs that made the previous version unusable and it had killed their productivity. The other big complaint is, while the new version may now be just 1 app (instead of a whole folder full of stuff), it leaves the old version still installed, taking up gigabytes of wasted storage. I don't think Apple has fixed that (yet?).
