Mobile ad vendor and service provider Skycore
has launched the ability for users to receive Passbook data through MMS. Providers of Passbook data can connect to Skycore's SaaS servers to provide secure delivery of passes to a user's phone. The passes then are opened, and stored in the user's Passbook app. Providers can monitor MMS delivery receipts, and verify installations of the provided data.
When the feature launched on September 19, users were greeted with a quizzical lack of interface, and suggestions to download apps from the App Store that were compatible with Passbook, including several airlines, Netflix movie tickets, Major League Baseball game tickets at select parts, Walgreens, Ticketmaster and LiveNation, Target, Fandango and Cineplex Odeon, and Sephora.
Since then, a number of other businesses have come on-board, including more airlines, ticketing sites StubHub and Tickets.com, American Express, McDonalds, Eventbrite and Airbnb, expanding the audience for Apple's "virtual wallet." In addition, a number of new startups are adding Passbook support, including coupon site Kiip and Billguard, the latter of which promises to make a user's credit and debit card data (balances, any suspicious activity, list of recent charges, et cetera) available securely at a glance through Passbook.
The new delivery method provides a secure, trackable method for companies to insure data is delivered to the proper recipient in a timely fashion, a complaint of some using the MLB ticket feature. Fees and charges for providers have not been disclosed.
