Apple is planning to launch an ad exchange, a Business Insider
source claims. The person is described as "an executive who is one of the biggest players in online advertising." Business Insider
cautions, though, that it can't confirm the plans, and that two other sources say they haven't heard anything about an exchange.
An Apple ad exchange
would let advertisers bid to serve ads targeting users of Apple platforms. It could potentially be launched under the banner of iAd, Apple's mobile advertising network.
At this week's D11 conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook explained
that advertising isn't a central business, but that the company wants app developers to pull in more revenue, increasing their interest in sticking with Apple. "We got into mobile advertising because we want developers to make money...It wasn't about Apple making money," he remarked.
