Social network Facebook has updated its iOS app to v6.2, which brings new access to change who can see something a user has shared, the ability to start a conversation based on photos users receive in messages, and the addition of icons to status updates that show emotions or what a user is reading or watching. The "status update icons" were added to the desktop version of the program in April, but mobile support has been missing until now. The update also includes the usual bug fixes, and the app can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

Apple retail employees invited to test OS X Mavericks

Apple has extended an invitation to Apple retail employees which allows them to receive access to the forthcoming OS X Mavericks (10.9) beta build recently seeded to developers, MacRumors reports. The offer, which is voluntary and requires employees to use the beta on their personal Macs and only work with it on their personal time, is intended to help retail employees get more familiar with the changes and features to be found in the release. The program also uses the employees to help find and document real-world use bugs. The offer is entirely voluntary and not part of the employees' job, and is a repeat of an invitation extended during Mountain Lion testing.

Leaked image suggests that missing 'Voice Memos' app returning soon

The Voice Memo app, which Apple specifically listed as being omitted from the first beta of iOS 7, is likely to return in a future build according to a leaked photo from the WWDC. In the screenshot, the app can be seen listed among the others, sporting a flat iOS 7-style "sine wave" icon to denote its function. The program, which has been included in previous versions of iOS, is a simple voice recorder that syncs to Macs or Windows machines through iTunes. The fact that Apple mentioned the omission in the notes for Beta 1 implied that it was set to return in the future, but had missed the cut for WWDC for unknown reasons. The omission may suggest that Apple is planning to beef up the capabilities of the program.

iSkin announces ProTouch MacBook Air keyboard protector for new 13-incher

Mobile accessory maker iSkin is now offering a new ProTouch keyboard protector skin made of ultra-thin silicon (rather than thermal polyurethane as with most keyboard protectors) for the MacBook Air, compatible with the latest model as well as previous ones. The version for the 13-inch MBA is available now, with the 11-inch version coming later this month. As with other keyboard protectors, the clear-frosted skin shows the letters and backlight of the MBA clearly and includes an antimicrobial coating to reduce fungus or odor-causing bacteria. It can be cleaned with warm water and dish soap and maintains its form after multiple washes. The website hasn't yet been updated to include price information, but the ProTouch for MacBook Air is expected to retail around $25. Similar versions are also available for various MacBook Pro models.
