The remains of a 15th-century hospital wall have been uncovered during the construction of a new Apple Store in Madrid, a local report says. Apple is currently renovating 1 Puerta del Sol, formerly the Paris Hotel. The ruins are those of the Buen Suceso hospital, which along with a church of the same name (pictured) was demolished in 1854 to make space for the current city square. The church was rediscovered during the construction of the Sol Metro and Cercanias light rail station in June 2009, and delayed that project for 10 months.

The permit to develop the site of the Apple Store was reportedly issued with the knowledge that more ruins might be found. Project managers are said to have considered installing a glass floor to allow the hospital ruins to be seen -- taking a cue from the remains of the church, which are viewable through glass partitions at the train station -- but opted against it, citing a lack of visual interest. Instead, Apple has been asked to change the design of the flooring to "symbolically" trace the outline of the old wall.

The Puerta del Sol Apple Store is expected to be finished by the end of year. Although it will be Apple's 11th location in Spain and the fourth in the Madrid area alone, it's also poised to become Apple's new flagship outlet for the country. It's unclear to what extent the archaeological findings might delay construction.
