As a part of a conference call for its third-quarter financial results
, Apple uncovered figures and plans for its retail stores. By the end of fiscal Q3, the company was up to 408 locations, of which 156 were outside the US. While store revenues were mostly flat year-over-year
, the retail segment did manage a profit of about $670 million.
On average Apple saw about 16,000 visitors per store, per week. The company says it's planning to open nine new stores in the next quarter for a total of 23 for the (fiscal) year; on top of this, though, the company has also done or will do a total of 23 "relocations," where stores are expanded or moved to larger quarters during the year. In many cases, the traffic in Apple Stores has outgrown the space available, prompting Apple to search for sites with more square footage. Other incentives for moving may include factors like expiring leases or renovations.
