The third and latest game in the BioShock franchise, BioShock Infinite
will debut on the Mac App Store, Steam and Mac publisher Aspyr's GameAgent
store on August 29
, with options for pre-ordering, bonuses and extra downloadable content -- as well as a way to save money on the game's $60 price. The game, which originally debuted on Windows, PlayStation and Xbox 360 in March, has won wide praise for its state-of-the-art graphics, artwork and story, though it is rated "M" for violence. The Mac version is likely to have steep graphics and horsepower requirements.
Buyers who pre-order the game directly from Aspyr's GameAgent store will be offered 20 percent off on the price of the Steam game, as well as access to the $5 "Columbia's Finest" downloadable content pack on Steam. Buyers of the Steam version will get access to both the PC and Mac versions, and the game supports the $20 Steam Season Pass, which lets subscribers get access to all three of the planned DLC packs, including "Clash in the Clouds" and the two-part "Burial at Sea." The Mac App Store doesn't initially offer any bonuses, but will have the game available on launch day.
The game takes place in the year 1912, and involves a former soldier named Booker DeWitt that has money issues: enough so that he is forced into an assignment that requires him to visit the flying city of Columbia and rescue a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood named Elizabeth. Once freed, DeWitt must battle warring factions, deadly zeppelins and a flying beast called the Songbird. Pricing and exact availability on the title has not yet been announced. The game supports the Xbox 360 wired gamepad and the PlayStation 3 Dualshock 3 Wireless controller, but does not support being installed on volumes formatted in the Case-Sensitive variant of Mac OS Extended.
Minimum requirements for BioShock Infinite call for Mountain Lion 10.8.4 or later, and Intel Core 2 Duo of 2.2GHz or better, 4GB of RAM and at least 512MB of VRAM, thus leaving out the Intel HD 3000 chipset or earlier Intel integrated chipsets (the Intel HD 4000 and 5000 are supported). The Nvidia GeForce 640M and higher are supported, as are the ATI Radeon HD 3870 and better.
