Almost simultaneously with an email announcement from Apple that it will be crediting recent buyers
of the company's iOS "iLife" (iPhoto, iMovie) and "iWork" apps (Pages, Numbers and Keynote for iOS) for part of their purchase price in light of making the suite free, the company's support boards report mysterious "Blue Screen of Death" type issues
when using the apps on the iPhone 5s, most often when accessing the upgrade's new multitasking system. Users eligible for the refund will receive an email from Apple.
CEO Tim Cook had previously mentioned that all new iOS devices sold after September 1 would be given the option to download both the iOS versions of the iWork and most iLife apps for free, but many users continued to buy the apps because they were unaware of or confused about the free offer, reports AppleInsider
. Thus, the company is notifying customers who bought the apps on or after September 1 and offering credit for their purchase price. The redemption code
included can be used "towards the purchase of any content on the iTunes Store, App Store or iBooks Store," according to the email.
New device buyers are notified when they first set up their devices that they have the option of downloading the iOS versions of iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Pages and Numbers along with iBooks at no charge to help them get started using Apple's apps. The apps have curiously not been given design overhauls to correspond with the visual language of iOS 7 yet, but the lack of such a change and dropping of the price could signal a plan to release an all-new version of the apps in the near future.
The "BSOD" issue with Pages, Numbers and Keynote appears to effect only iPhone 5s units. Videos have been posted on YouTube and elsewhere showing off the issue, which most frequently occurs when trying to use the new multitasking system (though there are also problems reported by some users when trying to quit the apps). It's not yet clear if the problem is universal with iPhone 5s owners. The applications in question switch to a blue screen, followed by a device restart.
An apparent workaround for the problem is to disable iCloud syncing for the iWork apps, or exiting to the home screen after quitting an iWork app before attempting to launch a different app. Apple has not yet commented on the problem.
