Intego has released Washing Machine 2014
, a complete reworking of one of its Mac utilities. Whereas the app's previous incarnation was as an Internet security tool, the new one is dedicated to file cleanup. It scans a Mac for duplicate or unneeded files, such as old caches and unused languages, and lets users delete them in order to reclaim space and/or speed up a system.
During the cleanup process, people can examine items the app has flagged in order to decide what to keep or remove. Automated cleanup still allows users to exercise a certain amount of control; this includes setting criteria like the minimum age of files, and which caches and logs will be removed.
Separating Washing Machine from some other cleanup utilities are its organization options. The app can be used to better organize OS X via Smart Dock, Smart Desktop, and Smart Folders options. The Smart Dock feature, for instance, identifies the most-used apps, and makes it easy to drag them into the Dock for quicker access.
Washing Machine 2014 costs $30 for a single license, and runs on OS X 10.6 or later. Two licenses are priced at $50; a five-license bundle is $80.
