The app formerly known as Read It Later (now called Pocket) has announced an upgrade to version 5.0 (free), which brings with it a new feature, "Highlights." The program can now showcase the best and most relevant articles that a user has saved for suggested reading, and together with "Pocket Preferences" can help users find new articles that would appeal to them based on the content they have saved and read most often. In addition, the new version offers streamlined navigation, bulk editing and more.

The iOS version of Pocket 5.0 is available now, with the Android version of the update coming in about a week. The Highlights feature makes more relevant or timely content (or that which is highly regarded by other users that have saved the same material) more prominent so that users get to it before it loses relevance, using four categories: "Best of," "Quick Reads," "Long Reads" and "Trending." The content suggestions and other sections are now more easily reached through a new sidebar.

Meanwhile, Pocket Preferences works with other apps and select websites to find additional content the user might like based on usage patterns (frequently-saved sites, authors or subjects). Visual titles for videos are now bigger, search has been improved, and users can leverage Bulk Edit to manage and make changes to lots of items simultaneously.

The Highlights feature will be rolled out slowly to help ramp up services to handle demand. It will eventually also be added to Pocket's web and Mac versions.
