All obstacles have been cleared, and the long-planned Union Square flagship Apple Store has finally received final clearance from the San Francisco City Council to demolish the current standing building and begin renovations and construction on the new store. The new building will be a two-story structure with an all-glass frontage facing Union Square, utilizing a cantilevered design that features a patio and waterfall behind the store.

One of the interesting architectural features of the store is that the front will have two of its 44-feet-tall panes of glass openable as a giant sliding door, allowing large items or palattes to be brought directly into the front of the store. The design changed significantly from its original concept, in part to preserve a historic fountain that shows the history of the city in plaque form. Pending one last (expected) approval from the mayor, the store could be open as early as next spring.

Apple Store app again giving away free iTunes songs for US users

Users of the Apple Store iPhone app will find that the company is again offering free items through the app to encourage repeated use. Now available are three songs -- one each from Bad Suns, Kris Bowers, and Master Blaster Sound System. The app itself offers a download code for the songs, which can then be redeemed on iTunes. Apple says the artists are "helping to define this year's musical landscape," but oddly the promotion does not appear on the iPad version of the Apple Store app.

I'm just waiting to hear that San Francisco is going to hold the project hostage until Apple agrees to add some mural depicting the history of the city to the outside of their building, just like every other Cali town demands lately.

Hey, maybe SF will get off their duff now and get to work on approving our conditional use permit instead of using their collective brain power to nit pick Apple's project...

Looks fancy...

all the Apple stores around here are in malls.
This one time, at Boot Camp, I stuck a flute up my PC.
