In an unusual move, Apple is sending out "critical security update" reminders to users running OS X 10.9.x if they haven't yet updated to 10.9.2, which fixes an SSL/VPN vulnerability. The reminder, which can appear as a notification on the user's desktop or as an update in Software Update (handled through the Mac App Store), emphasizes the importance of the 10.9.2 update, which also brought new features and other improvements on board. Apple may choose to similarly warn iOS 7 users who haven't updated yet, even though adoption has -- as is typical for both platforms -- been strong.

Burger King to roll out iPhone payments, advanced orders

Joining some of its rivals, fast food chain Burger King will roll out upgrades to its iPhone app that will allow users to pay for purchases using the device and may also offer the option of placing orders in advance for later pickup. Other restaurants -- most notably McDonald's and Taco Bell -- have already begun or are testing similar programs, following the lead established by Starbucks. The updated apps will also alert customers to coupons and specials, preparing for iBeacon or similar technology, and laying the foundation for Hotspot 2 technology, which will at some point in the near future offer the option of automatically logging in to such businesses' public Wi-Fi networks. An Android version of the app is also likely in development.
