About 40 percent of people planning to buy a smartphone in the next three months would be predisposed to buying an next-generation iPhone, according to a March ChangeWave survey. The group polled 4,109 people, and found that 26 percent said they were "somewhat likely" to buy an updated iPhone, while 14 percent were "very likely." ChangeWave says this is the highest demand for an unannounced iPhone it has ever seen.

The survey responses were based, however, on assumptions about what the next-generation iPhone will feature. Participants were asked about their interest in a phone with "a larger screen size, gesture control, a faster processor, an updated iOS operating system." While most of those data points are backed by rumors, gesture control -- beyond the basic touch commands already present -- is purely speculative. Apple has only explored patents related to concepts like air gestures, although it might want to implement them in light of competition from rival smartphone makers.

Bigger screen size is expected to be Apple's main selling point. The company is in fact said to be producing two new models, one measuring 4.7 inches and the other 5.5. The former is expected to ship in September or October, but the latter could ship as late as November, owing to production delays.

I'll be upgrading, not because it is bigger, but because my iPhone 4 is more than due to be replaced
