A&E has updated two of its iOS apps -- History, and the network's namesake -- with support for watching live TV. Previously users were able to watch clips and full episodes, but only after the fact. Like some other TV apps, gaining access to the live streams requires a cable subscription.

At the moment, access is further restricted to a set number of providers. The list so far includes Comcast Xfinity, DirecTV, Optimum, Verizon FiOS, Shaw Go, Time Warner Cable, Bright House, and some regional companies. A&E is promising that more providers will be added in the near future.

Bah! Then what's the point if I have to spend $100/mo for 100+ channels I don't want and don't want to support. When this becomes a deal where I subscribe to just those channels I want, you have my attention. And then let me see it at my desktop, not just iOS devices.

I completely agree, JackWebb. This (and similar offerings from other networks) seems to be more of a way for cable television subscribers to take portions of their home-based cable programming with them, on the go, on their iPads and iPhones.

While that's great for them, and I wish I were one of them, let me know when they want to make a way to reach more viewers outside of existing cable subscribers.
