Apple is using at least two shell companies to secure trademarks on future names for OS X, reports claim. On the same day in early December, two firms -- Yosemite Research LLC and Coast Research LLC -- are said to have filed for US trademarks on several California-related names. The former applied for "Yosemite," "Redwood, "and "Mammoth," while Coast pursued "California," "Big Sur," and "Pacific."

Although the companies could be unrelated and the timing coincidental, Apple is known to use shell companies to register trademarks. Both Yosemite and Coast were registered in Delaware on November 22nd, and use the Corporation Trust Center as an address. An attorney listed for Coast's applications is Stephen Brown, also mentioned on an iGuide Media application from 2007. That firm was later connected to Apple.

The new filings also cite applications in Trinidad and Tobago for priority purposes. Those efforts trace back to June 7th, the Friday before WWDC 2013, where Apple revealed plans to switch OS X's naming scheme from cats to California scenery, beginning with Mavericks. MacRumors notes that several other firms based at the Corporation Trust Center also made Trinidadian filings on June 7th. Landmark Associates applied for "Diablo," "Miramar," "Rincon," and "El Cap;" Cassowary Devices filed for "Redtail," "Condor," and "Grizzly;" Asilomar Enterprises took "Farallon," "Tiburon," and "Monterey," and Antalos Apps went after "Skyline," "Shasta," and "Sierra." The four outfits' US trademarks were all applied for on either December 5th or the 6th.

Yes... no more basketball team names!
This one time, at Boot Camp, I stuck a flute up my PC.
