Alternative telecom FreedomPop has announced that it is now selling the iPhone 5 (not the 5s or 5c, just the original iPhone 5 from 2012) and offering a free wireless plan with 200 voice minutes, 500 text messages and 500MB of data per month, the first time the Sprint MVNO has carried the iPhone. It will also support the CDMA versions of the iPhone 4 and 4S on its 3G network going forward, and has launched a new iOS app that offers free voice, text and voicemail to all iOS users on other carriers.

The iPhone 5 will cost $349, and does not require a contract. It offers both the free plan described above as well as a $5 per month "unlimited" plan. The app, which is also free but available separately, provides free voice, texts and voicemail (as well as a US phone number) for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users using either Wi-Fi or an existing cellular data plan with another carrier. "Customers also have the option to port their existing number to FreedomPop, or select a new one," the company said in its announcement.

The service only works in the US and is not available in all locations within the country, but it utilizes Sprint's existing network. Users who have the flexibility to alter their existing contracts could use the FreedomPop app to reduce the cost of their current contract until they can jump ship to another carrier or to FreedomPop.

The CDMA restriction does not apply to the free voice, texting and voicemail offered by the new FreedomPop app, since it is leveraging the existing data plan a user already has or Wi-Fi). Details are scarce, but the iPhone 5 is already available for sale on the company's website.
