A new survey by ad network and statistics aggregator Chitika has established that the United Kingdom as the region with the strongest and most rapid adoption of iOS 7, beating both North America and Australia. The company analyzed web traffic and ad response generated by devices in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. It found that the UK tied with North America in terms of iPhone iOS 7 adoption, but greater use of iOS 7 among iPad owners allowed the UK to take the crown.

Although Apple has recently focused attention on its forthcoming iOS 8 release, iOS 7 is the current public release and -- as CEO Tim Cook pointed out in his WWDC keynote -- achieved the fastest adoption rate of any operating system in history, and is now the world's most popular mobile operating system version thanks in large part to its rapid adoption. While Android as a platform is active on more devices, it is highly fragmented -- with most devices running an older-than-current version of the OS.

Chitika took its measurements from online ad impressions in North America, UK and Australia from May 22–28. The results from the UK and North America showed adoption at just under 90 percent (89.7 to be exact), with Australia slightly behind at 86.2 percent. Analysts at Chitika speculate that the early problems with the built-in iOS Maps app in iOS 7 -- which in particular had issues in Australia, resulting in some people getting lost -- may have hindered adoption. Australians are more likely to be running iOS 6 (on both the iPhone and the iPad) than the other regions surveyed.

Among iPad owners, the UK surged ahead of both North America and Australia, achieving at 87 percent compared to 84.8 percent for North America. Australia lagged behind with just 83.3 percent adoption. On the other end of the scale, North American users were more likely to be running the older iOS 5, iOS 4 and earlier than other regions. This may be due in part to the early availability of the original iPad and earlier iPhones in the US than in the other regions, where the devices were often delayed by up to a year.

Australia has a population of merely 23 million and Canada has a population of 35 million while Canada also has one of the world's highest Apple product usage in the world. Why don't they post details of Canada's iOS adoption rate?

@chucker As I can see that you don't know where the shift keys are for your computer, you also don't know that Canada is not a state of the US. We are an entire country that is larger than Australia in geographical size and larger than Australia in population. (Also, we are bigger than the US in geographical size.)

Yes, it's annoying to me as well that Canada's stats are rarely broken out, and generally just lumped in with the US as "North America," but I suppose it makes the US market look bigger so I imagine that's why they do it. As ElectroTech says, Canada is one of the most "enlightened" (in terms of Mac usage) countries in the world. A fair few past and present MacNN staffers are from there.
