Following Friday's surprise announcement by Apple that it will cease developing Aperture -- a rare acknowledgement of this by the company -- Corel has joined the growing number of companies that are or are planning to woo the photo-enthusiast and creative pro crowd displaced by Aperture's discontinuation. While the program will continue to operate as expected in both Mavericks and Yosemite and possibly beyond, most users are expected to eventually migrate to alternatives -- including, Corel hopes, its own AfterShot Pro 2.

While Adobe is working with Apple to transition users who want to take up the company's Lightroom software as a replacement, Corel has also entered the fray, cutting the price of the $80 AfterShot Pro 2 for users of Aperture (or Lightroom, for that matter) to $60. The company says it will also look at ways to help Aperture users migrate to its product. AfterShot's file system and overall UI may prove more familiar to Aperture users than Lightroom in its current form, and Corel says it is already preparing AfterShot to be ready for OS X Yosemite in the near future.

At $60 (or even at its normal $80), AfterShot Pro 2 is significantly less expensive than Lightroom, and claims the product is significantly faster than either Aperture or Lightroom. The program offers selective and non-destructive editing, fast RAW cataloging and editing performance, keywords and ratings, support for all major camera brands, custom presets and easy batch processing.

The next version of the program is said to be adding HDR processing for the Mac and Linux versions, a feature already present on the Windows version. The program updated to the new major v2 last month, and originally announced the competitive pricing offer then, but took the opportunity caused by Friday's news to re-publicize the sale. Like Adobe, Corel sought to reassure Mac users that it remains committed to the platform: "You can expect to see more from us with AfterShot on the Mac in the near future," the company said. A trial version of the software is also available.

Note: This was not an official "Apple announcement".

This was news communicated by Jim Dalrymple –
but, sadly, nevertheless true.

Need to compare this to Capture One Pro -- they both look like contenders in terms of functionality and I *really* hate Adobe's licensing scheme even if Lightroom is nominally still available without a CC subscription.

Agree w/ you, jreades...Adobe's strategy has only further alienated our interest in upgrading their products. We either stay with what we have (CS5) or we look at alternatives.

That said, has anyone had experience with this Corel product? Until this article, I never knew it existed.
