Apple has announced that a major update is coming to the iTunes U iPad app on July 8. The app will not only gain class discussions, but full teacher control of courses -- allowing educators to personally create, edit, and manage them. This includes adding content from iWork, iBooks Author, and educational apps, plus photos and videos captured directly from an iPad.

The Discussions feature will operate like a private forum, with students and teachers alike being able to submit topics and reply to comments. Teachers will have the power to delete topics and comments at will.

Apple has been heavily pushing the iPad as an option for schools that want to bring computers to individual students but without the complications of a laptop. It's unclear how many schools are relying on iTunes U, since educational apps and textbooks can be used on iPads outside of that framework. Apple rarely shares statistics on the service.

Great! Anything that makes iTunes U better is more than welcome. That thing has potential, unfortunaletly it's not nearly enough publicized.

And if Apple even manages to get a new version of iBooks Author out the door, that would be icing on the cake. Preferrably something less buggy than the current version, which I both love and loathe (equally). Thanks.
