A lineup has already formed outside of Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City in advance of the Friday launch of the iPhone 5. Since preorders are already sold out, lining up at retail stores may now be the only way of getting a 5 on September 21st. A number of the first people in line at Fifth Avenue, however, are reportedly there only for the sake of publicity.

An AppleInsider reader notes that several of the people are hoping to promote websites, and were this morning being interviewed for a CBS New York show, The Couch. Fortune elaborates, pointing out that two people are promoting a company called Vibe, while several others are being sponsored by resale site Gazelle, and are decked out in their advertising. Fifth Avenue is often the focus of TV news coverage during any iPhone launch. The store has become increasingly less important to actual sales, though, since the device is now available from a variety of carriers and third-party outlets, and Apple has improved overall supply. Apple has also expanded its retail footprint in New York City, adding locations and upgrading its SoHo store.

The amount of people going for iPhone 5 makes T-Mobile's comment looks like an A-S-S.

Yep, just goes to show you that people standing in line for a phone have absolutely nothing better to do with their lives (or just out to get on TV or the internet, or both!). I mean, I guess they could have such low self-worth that they feel the need to stand in line so, deep inside somewhere, they'll feel like they've succeeded at something by getting an iPhone on day 1. Assuming, of course, they've pre-ordered it.

Certainly far worse than those who feel the need to have the latest and greatest on day 1, so bad that they actually set an alarm to wake themselves up so they could pre-order as soon as possible. Although, based on economies of scale and all that, I guess you do get the best value for your money on day 1, since it isn't like Apple will cut the price of this thing along the way. So if you wait four months, Apple will make more profit on you...

Though I do feel sorry for those nimrods who wait and get their iPhones months after it was released. Just ordering it online and getting a box to your door. No lines of people. No fanfare of holding it up to family and friends and going "I got one! And on day 1!". They just have an iPhone 5 in like November. Ha! What losers! Maybe they take their 'new' iPhone and then move to another area, where no one knows them, so when they show off their 'new' iPhone, they can pretend and say "Oh, yeah, well, I've had it since day 1, but it's like I'm still discovering it!".

At least Apple makes a device worth waiting for.

No, Apple has a following of fanatics who'll stand in line waiting for apple socks, if owning apple socks was considered a 'cool thing'.

Hey, no need to be so harsh!

Look at all the good Apple is doing to those unemployed people suddenly getting a short lived but nevertheless welcome job where no skills whatsoever are needed...
