Highly respected recording artist Peter Gabriel has teamed with a robotics professor, Henrik Hautop Lund on MusicTiles a new app for iOS. The app allows users, musical and non-musical, to remix songs by manipulating modular tiles into different sequences. Users can record their own version of a song and email to their friends or share it on musictiles.com.
There are 7 song versions included, although the single Download/Buy song button may by confusing at first glance. Users can choose to download three versions of 'Red Rain' by Peter Gabriel, the 'MusicTiles Theme' and 'Love Phase' by Nomatisan and 'More' by Carpark North. Users also have the option to purchase song bundles or a special version of Peter Gabriel's 'So' that includes three versions of each song from the original recording.
According to the background info supplied with the app, it based on the concept of RoboMusic developed by Hautop Lund drawing its inspiration from modular robotics, embodied artificial intelligence and playware. It was then ultimately further developed into its final form by Hautop Lund along with Luigi Pagliarini and Peter Gabriel.
Electronista has had a quick hands-on with the app and can report that it looks like a lot of fun. The app did require a reboot of the iPad after installation, but after that it worked without incident. Songs can take a while to download in the first instance, but once loaded, fans of the music will be very interested to here individual tracks isolated and then rework them into completely original remixes. Other artists can contribute tracks to the app if they choose. [viaFast Company]
