Recent shipping delays for the 27-inch iMac can be blamed on production problems at LG Display, say industry sources reached by DigiTimes. The people claim that LG has been encountering trouble with lamination, limiting the number of screens it can send out for assembly. Only about 100,000 27-inch systems can be shipped each month, the sources say.

This contrasts with the production of 21.5-inch iMacs, which is reportedly up to between 300,000 and 400,000 units per month. 27-inch panel supply is expected to improve by February. Earlier this week, Apple for a second time extended shipping delays for 27-inch systems to between three and four weeks. Normally the company is able to freeze or continually shrink delivery times for products, but appears to have had limited stock of the 27-inch iMac since it first went on sale late last year. The computer uses an unusually thin design, which may be further complicating the situation.

Sadly, all these delays are for nothing. Most of use could care less if our desktop display is excruciating thin or not. An inch or even five inches makes no difference in whether it fits on our desk or not.

We'd rather it not take a PhD in engineering to open the thing if a DVD gets stuck inside, as it is with my iMac.
