Meridian has introduced the Explorer, a new portable USB Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). The Explorer can connect to any Mac, Windows, or Linux computer and will act as the system's sound card. All audio signals routed through the device are passed through the built-in DAC, which should provide higher-fidelity audio, depending on the initial resolution of the audio source. In addition to a 3.5mm headphone port, the Explorer also includes an audio in port for sending external audio sources into a computer. It retails for $300.

Standford students release new video messaging service A group of Stanford students have announced that their new video message board service for iOS devices is now available in the App Store. The new app, Shortwave, lets users post, reply, and vote on topics by using short video messages. All video responses are automatically sorted into a continuous thread, allowing all users to join in on a topic and see how the conversation has developed. Users also have the option to vote for and against each reply, and this information will be used to dynamically rearrange the content for the next viewer.
