LG has opened up
pre-orders for its 55-inch OLED HD television in the United Kingdom. Shipping to customers in the US and
South Korea later this month, the 55EM970V weighs less than 22 pounds, measures 4.5mm (0.18-inches) thick, and though will not offer the same Ultra-HD resolution as its larger 84-inch counterpart, it will still provide what is claimed to be "exceptional picture quality."
First shown off at
CES in 2012 and subsequently receiving a number of awards, the display uses a carbon fiber backing in order to stay as thin as possible. LG's WRGB technology allows the set to use a white sub-pixel to improve the color quality, and also comes with Smart TV and Cinema 3D capabilities.
Pre-orders for the first shipments are being accepted by Harrods of Knightsbridge, London, for delivery to UK customers in July at a cost of £10,000 ($15,000).
Though the pricetag is high for a HDTV, LG is working on increasing the supply of OLED panels in the future through a
$657 million investment into OLED production lines.
