With just a week away from the official launch of the Galaxy S4, the key specs
of Samsung's eagerly awaited Galaxy S3 successor has had its specs 'confirmed,' reports Pocket-lint. Citing an unnamed, but reliable source, the Galaxy S4 will debut Samsung's previously announced
28nm Exynos 5 Octa, eight-core CPU. The source also confirmed original reports
that the device will sport a 5-inch Super AMOLED 1080p display.
The Exynos 5 Octa features four Cortex-A15 cores for tasks requiring high-performance, which are supplemented by four additional Cortex-A7 cores for lighter workloads. Although the die contains 8 cores in total, only four cores function at any one time. Samsung claims that the combination delivers up to 70 percent energy savings compared to the Exynos 4 Quad powering the Galaxy S3. It is not dissimilar to the approach that Nvidia has adopted with the power saving single core in both the Tegra 3 and Tegra 4 designs.
However, while Samsung has not revealed the GPU that it has built into the SoC, previous reports suggest that it incorporates a tri-core PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU clocked at 533MHz. It offers a substantial performance boost over the ARM Mali-T604 paired with the Exynos 5 Cortex-A15 processor found in its latest Google Chromebook
, though it will still be outgunned by the GPU in Apple's A6X GPU. The A6X uses a quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4 producing 71.6 gigaflops of computational performance, where the GPU in the Exynos 5 Octa will only be capable of 51.1 gigaflops by comparison.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 is set to be revealed
on March 14 and will also feature 'eye scrolling.'
