Mobile safety and security developer Securus has unveiled the SpotLite 2.0, a GPS pet locator that enables tracking and location of cats and dogs. The new 2.0 version, in addition to being waterproof, enables pet owners to keep tabs on companion animals online with an Apple, BlackBerry or Android smartphone or tablet device, by sending a text message, and also view turn-by-turn GPS directions to recover pets on the run.

SpotLite 2.0 purchases come with lifetime enrollment in American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery's (AKC CAR) service, which provides 24/7 recovery support. Users can establish SafeSpots such as their yard or neighborhood and receive text messages or email alerts when a pet leaves the designated area, along with location updates every 30 seconds in continuous tracking mode. The device attaches to the pet's collar with the included protective pouch, and it also comes with a wall charger and AKC CAR collar tag with a unique identification number. The device is equipped with an SOS button that alerts the pet's owner when pressed. The SpotLite 2.0 package retails for $120. The device incurs an activation fee of $30 and a recurring fee of $20 per month if paid month to month, or two years of service can be paid in advance for $312.

I wonder if this has other applications. Like for little kids in parks.
