Canon has taken the covers off the EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR, which it is calling the world's smallest and lightest full-featured digital SLR camera. The new device weighs 14.36 ounces and is 25 percent smaller and 28 percent lighter than the EOS Rebel T4i as a point of comparison. Canon appears to be targeting the device at would-be mirrorless camera buyers or those interested in micro four thirds devices.

The EOS Rebel SL1 incorporates a newly developed 18-megapixel CMOS APS-C sensor and utilizes Canon's Digic 5 image processor. It has an ISO range of 100-12800 that is expandable to H: 25600 for photos, while it also has an ISO of 6400 that is expandable to 12800 for shooting video. Shooting speed is up to four frames per second. The SL1 also includes Canon's nine-point center cross-type autofocus powered by its Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor.

The Rebel SL1's imaging power is supplemented by an EF-S 18-55mm f/3 5-5.6 IS STM lens works with Canon's movie servo auto-focus that provides continuous autofocus tracking of moving subjects. Canon says that it also works smoothly and silently, so it doesn't impinge on the audio track when shooting. The SLI also incorporates a 3-inch touch screen LCD viewfinder for easy navigation of settings and additional functions.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR will reach store shelves in April for $650 body-only, or $800 with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3 5-5.6 IS STM lens kit.
