HTC has revealed that its critically well-received next-generation One smartphone has been pushed back yet again. While the company previously indicated
that it was heading towards an early April launch in the US, it appears that is no longer the case according to a statement released by the company. Parts shortages
and difficulty fabricating its aluminum unibody case has meant the company will miss its original US launch window by up to a month.
"HTC has seen unprecedented demand for and interest in the new HTC One, and the care taken to design and build it is evidenced in early reviews," said an HTC spokesperson. "The new HTC One will roll out in the UK, Germany and Taiwan next week and across Europe, North America and most of Asia-Pacific before the end of April," the spokesperson revealed. 'We appreciate our customers' patience, and believe that once they have the phone in their hands they will agree that it has been worth the wait," the statement concluded.
The HTC One is now in real danger of being overrun by the US availability of the Galaxy S 4
, which is also set go on sale next month. Where it may have had up to a one month head start on Samsung's 2013 flagship, it will now find that it is in a position where it be competing with it head-to-head, which could further impact on its already stagnating sales
. The Android market momentum lies almost entirely with Samsung, while HTC along with other Android handset makers have been almost squeezed out of the market with Apple's iPhone at the other end of the spectrum.
The US market version of the Galaxy S 4 will be powered by the same quad-core Snapdragon 600 as the HTC One. However, the HTC has some distinct points of differentiation including its all-aluminum chassis and higher resolution 1080p 4.7-inch 468ppi LCD display. Although the Galaxy S 4 also has a 1080p display, it is a pentile-type OLED with a 441ppi, while its large 5-inch form factor makes it more difficult to operate with only one hand. The Galaxy S 4 has also been criticized for continuing with a plastic case as well as retaining the same styling as the Galaxy S 3 it supersedes. [via Ubergizmo
