Google is sending invitations out to participants in a social media campaign for the Google Glass Explorer reservation program. Individuals will receive a message from Google over Google+ or Twitter confirming the invite, if their entry to the #ifIhadglass competition was impressive enough to the search engine, over the next few days.
A post on the project's Google+ account thanked entrants for the enthusiastic response to the contest, which required participants to use up to 50 words, five images, and a 15-second video clip to show what they would use Glass for. Google did not reveal how many invitations it would send out to prospective Glass candidates, but the now-removed competition terms and conditions mentioned 8,000 invites would be sent out. The competition page now offers registration to a mailing list, said to provide more chances to obtain Glass later this year.
It is also noted by Google that a number of businesses applied for Glass as part of the contest, such as JetBlue with its air travel mock-up. Though the Explorer Program is stressed as "only for individuals," Google states it is workon on "connecting with businesses in other ways."
The eventual release of a consumer version of Google Glass is expected to take place before the end of this year, with a price at or below that of the $1,500 paid by developers for the Explorer edition.
