Microsoft has won patents for the ornamental design
of its Touch Cover for the Surface hybrid as well as for the cover's magnetic latching mechanism
. The patent for the ornamental design of the Touch Cover is very similar to Apple's controversial ornamental design patents invoked in lawsuits most notably against Samsung. However, the patent for the magnetic latching mechanism is for its functional design.
While there is much to be said for the design of the Touch Cover, we found that it was limited in its usefulness in our full review of the Surface RT
. The typing experience was only effective for composing short compositions like emails or for taking quick notes. However, the Surface Type Cover, which is only slightly thicker and heavier provides a far more tactile and effective tying experience.
We have not seen any patent application for the Type Cover surface yet, although we can be sure that it is also going through the approval process. The latching mechanism, which is common between the two keyboards, is one of the best features of the Surface in every day use. Of all the combinations of tablets that feature removal keyboards, the Surface Type Cover and Touch Cover are among the most elegant and effective. [via Engadget
