Intel has used the 2013 Game Developers conference to debut two new DirectX extensions designed to enable better gaming capabilities from the integrated graphics cores in its forthcoming 22nm 'Haswell'
chips. One of the new extensions, PixelSync, will give developers the ability to create more complex geometry without impacting on CPU performance. The technology is currently being incorporated into Creative Assembly's Total War: Rome II with the aim to make the game look equally good on ultrabooks as well as gaming rigs.
"We've shifted our focus toward ensuring that the game looks great whether you're running it on a slim and sexy ultrabook or a monster desktop," says Mike Simpson of Creative Assembly. "The new rendering extensions...have been an enormous help in making that dream a reality," he added.
The second of the two new extensions, Instant Access, allows the CPU or the integrated GPU to directly access system RAM allowing the GPU to act more independently in a way similar to a discrete GPU. Users buying the ultrabooks equipped with the fourth-generation of Core processors can expect to enjoy better looking smoke effects, hair, windows, and foliage among other enhancements.
The Haswell GPU is expected to deliver double the performance of the Intel HD4000 incorporated in the 'Ivy Bridge chips when it debuts in PC notebooks and Apple MacBooks in the second half of this year.
