Twitter's April 2
developer event has concluded, with the social service implementing deep-linking into its "Cards" metaphor for content representation. The feature allows users to tap a link to either view content directly in an app, or download the app in question -- depending on whether or not the user already has the app installed. In addition to the deep-linking, three new card types have been added for developers, representing a photo gallery, physical products, and app info.
With the update to Cards, Twitter is also changing the way Cards are created and delivered. The new system lays a foundation that will make it easier for Twitter to develop more types of Cards in the future and allow for greater customization by publishers and developers. The new system is backward compatible with the old API -- if developers have already implemented Cards, integrations will continue to work seamlessly.
The developer event also has added three types of Twitter Cards to the service. The first addition is the "App" card, displaying information about the app, including name, icon, description, and other details such as rating or price. Information is collectable from either the iOS App Store, or Google Play.
A "Product" card has also been added, allowing for physical items to be shown with an item and description, with two customizable data fields to display more details such as price or dimensions. Finally, a "Gallery" card can display a collection of photographs through a preview of an existing photo library. The "Gallery" card is a representation to the user that an entire gallery has been shared, rather than just a single photo.
In a blog post
marking the addition, Twitter claims to be launching the capabilities with partners including Delectable, Etsy, Flickr, Foursquare, Gumroad, Jawbone, Path, Rovio's Angry Birds, SoundCloud, Storenvy, Wine Library, and Vine. The partners will be enabling the new features within the next 24 hours.
