Google has updated its cloud-based storage service and Drive SDK to help developers protect data used in apps, similar to functions used in iCloud. The new app data folders are hidden folders within the Google Drive itself, helping to protect app-specific data from unwanted interference through malicious programs, or even the owner of the drive themselves.

The app data folders, spotted by TechCrunch, are designed for use with configuration files and other data that should not be modified by external sources. The Google Apps Developer Blog mentions that, though users cannot see the files in the app data folder, the amount of data stored will be viewable through the Manage Apps dialog box.

Apps also have the power to add custom file properties to files stored in Google Drive. This will allow apps to create searchable fields specific to the app, with the option of opening up field access to other apps.
