Dell's Alienware venue for premium gaming PC's has revealed that it is making Ubuntu available on a line of compact desktop units. Alienware X51 customers can select from either Windows of Ubuntu when purchasing a new machine. Systems pre-loaded with Ubuntu Linux retail for about $100 less than a Windows counterpart.

The system comes pre-loaded with drivers from Nvidia, which prevents the user from immediately having to hunt down drivers. Dell points out the Steam marketplace which has a significant quantity of Linux-compatible games to purchase, including many that support Big Picture Mode, enhancing the PCs use on a big-screen television.

The X51 has a variety of Ivy Bridge processors to choose from, and can have a maximum of 8GB of RAM, with either a Nvidia GeForce GT645 or GTX660 GPU. A Core i3-3220 running at 3.3GHz with 6GB of DDR3 RAM, and a1GB GTX 645 GPU running Ubuntu Linux retails for $599.
