Sony will be opening up two new Ultra HD televisions for pre-order in the United States on April 21st, alongside an announcement for the company's 4K Media Player
and video distribution service. The 55-inch and 65-inch sets
, both capable of displaying 4K-resolution content, will be priced considerably less than the $25,000
flagship counterpart, measuring at 84 inches diagonally, but will still retain most of its feature set.
The two UHDTVs, the XBR-65X900A
for the 65-inch and 55-inch models respectively, offer displays using Triluminos
technology, image processing through a two-chip 4K X-Reality PRO picture engine, and edge-lit LED back-lighting. Smatphone mirroring is also available, while sound is provided through 65-Watt ferrofluid speakers. Four pairs of 3D glasses are also provided, though the TVs will only display 3D content at a 2K resolution and lower.
In the summer, Sony will be offering 4K UHD TV customers the option to buy the FMP-X1 4K Media Player, which allows for 4K content playback. The unit will be loaded with 10 feature films and shorts, including Bad Teacher, Battle: Los Angeles, Taxi Driver, and the 2012 reboot of Total Recall, with an extra fee-based video distribution service due in the fall to provide more content.
The 55-inch and 65-inch UHD TVs will cost $5,000 and $7,000 respectively, while the FMP-X1 4K Media Player will cost $700.
