HP today unveiled the world's first commercially-available Moonshot
system, which the company claims uses up to 89 percent less energy, occupies 80 percent less space, and costs 77 percent less compared to traditional X86 servers with the same processing power. The 4.3-unit high system is tailored for "social, cloud, mobile, and big-data" uses.
The HP Moonshot system consists of the HP Moonshot 1500 enclosure and application-optimized HP ProLiant Moonshot servers. The system, first announced in 2011
, will offer processors from multiple HP partners, each targeting a specific workload. A full rack can hold up to 1,800 Moonshot servers.
Each Moonshot server has a single Atom S1260 dual-core processor, running at 2GHz. A single RAM slot can hold up to 8GB of RAM, and the units have a single 2.5-inch slot for either a single SATA hard drive or SSD. Operating systems compatible with the Moonshot are Canonical Ubuntu 12.04, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4, or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2.
HP Moonshot 1500, the 4.3u server enclosure, is fully equipped with 45 Intel Atom-based servers, one network switch and supporting components. The enclosure and servers will be available some time in the second half of 2013 for a $61,875 and up, depending on configuration.
